Wearing the right kit

Cycle Safety - Wearing the right kit

Whether you decide to use an e-bike, e-scooter or bicycle, having the right kit and equipment, will keep you and others safe on the roads.

There are different legal rules around e-scooters, e-bike and bicycles, so start with understanding your mode of transport you have, before knowing what equipment you'll need.

E-bikes

Helmets - if you have an e-bike, which has a fixed speed of 15.5 mph and under, (classified as an electronically assisted pedal cycle EACP) you are recommended to wear a helmet. If your e-bike can go above 15.5 mph, legally you must wear a motorcycle helmet meeting British Safety Standards.

Clothing - You are recommended to wear motorcycle protective equipment, if you have an EACP, which can go over 15.5mph, which can vary for jackets, trousers and protective gloves.

If your e-bike is not an EACP, it will be classed as a motorcycle, therefore all rules apply.

“There’s no law about wearing other protective clothing, but specialised motorcycle gear is highly recommended - it could save your life”
