Charge Safe (electric bike and scooter fire safety)

Electric bikes (e-bikes) and electric scooters (e-scooters) are becoming increasingly popular. Most are powered by lithium-ion batteries which can be charged in the home. The use of these batteries in a wide range of household products is becoming increasingly common.

We have seen a rise in the number of fires involving e-scooters and e-bikes, although it should be noted that there will be a correlation to the rapid growth in sales and ownership of these electrically powered personal vehicles.

Our Charge Safe campaign aims to reduce the number of e-bike and e-scooter fires across Greater Manchester by raising awareness about safe buying, charging and storage.

The key messages for the campaign are:

  • Don’t leave your device charging unattended or when you’re asleep.
  • Don’t charge or store your battery in the hallway or where it could block your escape.
  • Only use the correct charger for your battery.
  • Only buy e-bikes, e-scooters and batteries from trusted retailers and manufacturers.
  • Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Don’t attempt to modify or tamper with the battery.
  • Check for the CE or UKCA safety marking to make sure your battery and charger meet safety standards.
  • It is recommended that a professional carries out an e-bike conversion.
