Firefighters tackle fire involving large amount of scrap metal at site in Bury

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service firefighters tackled a large fire at a commercial premises involving scrap metal throughout the early hours of this morning (Tuesday, September 3).

At it's height eight fire engines from Bury, Whitefield, Ramsbottom, Heywood, Broughton, Agecroft, Oldham and Bolton were called to the scene on Pimhole Road, Bury.

A number of special appliances, including the turntable ladder and drone unit, were also called to the incident.

Road closures were put in place and GMFRS crews worked alongside partner agencies to get the blaze under control.

Four fire engines remain in attendance as the incident is ongoing.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “At just after 1.30am on Tuesday (September 3) eight fire engines plus a number of special appliances, including the turntable ladder and drone unit, were called to a fire involving a large amount of scrap metal at a commercial premises on Pimhole Road, Bury.

“Four fire engines remain in attendance while crews continue to tackle the blaze. Road closures in the surrounding area are in place and residents are advised to keep their windows and doors closed.”


11.50am update

Firefighters have now left the scene with the site and surrounding area having been made safe.

GMFRS officers worked tirelessly through the early hours to keep this incident under control and prevent it from spreading. We would like to thank members of the public and local businesses for their understanding while we dealt with this incident.

9.30am update

The fire involving a large amount of scrap metal on Pimhole Road in Bury has now been extinguished by GMFRS crews.

Firefighters remain at the scene to dampen down any remaining hot spots and to spread the debris.

Rochdale Road has been re-opened.
