A Career as a Firefighter

Join GMFRS as a Firefighter – a career that makes a real difference!

At Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS), being a Firefighter is more than just a job—it’s ordinary people who do extraordinary things. Every day brings new challenges, and no two shifts are ever the same.

Whether you're responding to emergencies, educating communities on fire safety, or ensuring buildings meet safety regulations, you’ll play a vital role in protecting lives and property. In challenging situations, you’ll be there to support those in distress, offering reassurance, empathy, and clear guidance. Quick thinking, problem-solving, and the ability to stay calm under pressure will be crucial as you make decisions that could save lives and protect communities.

What does a Firefighter do?

Prevention – stopping fires before they start

Firefighters don’t just put out fires—they work hard to prevent them from happening in the first place. Through our Home Fire Safety Assessments, you’ll visit homes across Greater Manchester, checking smoke alarms, assessing fire risks, and giving life-saving advice on how to stay safe. You’ll also work with schools, businesses, and local organisations to promote fire and water safety awareness, ensuring our communities are prepared and protected.

Protection – keeping people and places safe

As a firefighter, you’ll be at the forefront of fire safety enforcement. You’ll inspect buildings, work with local businesses, and advise on fire regulations to ensure public spaces are safe for everyone. Whether it’s checking escape routes or reviewing safety measures in high-risk premises, your work will help prevent disasters before they happen.

Response – answering the call when it matters most

When emergencies happen, GMFRS firefighters spring into action. From battling house fires and rescuing people from road traffic collisions to dealing with floods, hazardous chemical spills, and even major incidents like terrorist attacks, you’ll be trained to handle every scenario with skill and courage. No matter the challenge, you’ll be there to protect the people of Greater Manchester when they need you most.
