Statement from Chief Fire Officer following the release of the Grenfell Tower Inquiry Phase 2 Report
Today across Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, our thoughts are with the Grenfell community in particular the bereaved, the survivors of the fire, and the 72 innocent people who lost their lives.
The report today published by the Grenfell Tower Inquiry represents another significant step in ensuring that lessons are learned, and action is taken across a range of sectors. It will take some time to fully consider the implications of the report and its recommendations but we will do this and work with partners to take any action necessary to ensure the safety of residents.
GMFRS responded to the recommendations from the Phase 1 report and we have implemented new procedures and training for all our firefighters, including regular large-scale training exercises to ensure crews are adequately prepared and equipped to respond to high-rise incidents. We also run high-rise days of action to ensure residents are aware of their building’s evacuation strategy and receive our flat fire safety leaflets.
We know that too many residents are still living in buildings with fire safety defects and we remain committed to doing all we can as a fire and rescue service to make sure these buildings are safe.
Chief Fire Officer, Dave Russel
