GMFRS support Old People's Day

YESTERDAY (Sunday, October 1, 2017) was the annual international day for older people – which as in previous years was supported by Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS).

The theme for this year’s Older People’s Day is about enabling and expanding the contributions of older people in their families, communities and societies at large.

A number of events have been planned for the coming weeks where staff members from GMFRS will be spending time with older members of the community to keep them company as well as ensure they are safe in their homes.

On Tuesday, October 3, firefighters from Stockport will be dropping by at a Winter Warmth event in Stockport Market Place, and later in the month one of GMFRS’ community safety managers is set to attend a conference at a local hospital where the Service will host a stall promoting fire safety and book Safe and Well visits.

Councillor David Acton, Chair of the Fire Committee, said: “In recent years people over the age of 60 have accounted for almost half of all fire fatalities, with that age group making up less than 20 per cent of the population of Greater Manchester.

“If you are visiting older friends or relatives or you can spare time to call at a neighbour’s then please do test their smoke alarm while you are there.

“For free safety advice or to book a Safe and Well visit, for yourself or an elderly friend or relative, please call 0800 555 815.”
