Industrial unit fire- Kirkless Industrial Estate, Aspull

11.10am update

Three fire engines, an aerial appliance and the Scorpion remain tackling the fire at Kirkless Industrial Estate in Aspull, Wigan.

GMFRS are working with Wigan Council and other partners to minimise the impact for residents.

Station Manager Andy Hardman said: “Our crews continue to work extremely hard to extinguish this fire. They have made excellent progress this morning and have now scaled back the incident significantly.

"We would like to thank residents for their cooperation so far and to please continue to keep their windows and doors closed.

"I'd like to praise the hard work of all of crews who have been fighting this fire this morning.”

Firefighters remain at the scene while they work to ensure the fire is fully extinguished.

Local residents should continue to keep their doors and windows closed at this time.

9.15am update

Eight fire engines are currently tackling a fire at Kirkless Industrial Estate in Aspull, Wigan. Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) were called to reports of a fire at 5.45am on the 14th November and were quickly on the scene.

Firefighters from Wigan, Leigh, Atherton, Salford, Bolton, Stockport and Rochdale are  tackling the blaze using six jets and one spray plate as well as specialist appliances; the Stinger and the Scorpion to fight the fire involving around 400 vehicles.

GMFRS are also working with local partners to reduce the environmental impact of the fire.

The incident is in the process of being scaled back, Firefighters remain at the scene while they work to ensure the fire is fully extinguished.

Local residents are being asked to keep their windows and doors closed at this time due to the large quantity of smoke issuing from the fire.
