Industrial fire - Aspull

8.30AM UPDATE - 30.05.2020

Four fire engines and a high volume pump remain at the scene of a fire at Kirkless Industrial Estate this morning.

Crew were initially called to the scene in Aspull at 6.55pm last night.

Firefighters are working with site owners to dampen down any remaining pockets of fire.

Staff on site are using heavy machinery to break down paper bales with firefighters putting water onto hot spots.

GMFRS are expected to be at the incident throughout the day.

Seven fire engines are currently dealing with an incident at Kirkless Industrial Estate in Wigan.

Crew mobilised to the incident in Cale Lane at 6.55pm.

Approximately 200 tonnes of waste paper is currently ablaze with firefighters using jets to douse the flames.

A large amount of smoke has discharged over the local area and residents are asked to keep their doors and windows closed and avoid the area to allow our crew to work.

While the blaze is being controlled, firefighters will remain at the scene throughout the night as they work to ensure the fire is fully extinguished.
