Borough: All

Incident Date: 30 January 2018

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service attended 32 incidents between 8am at 5.30pm, Tuesday January 30. Read about a shipping container fire and two garden fires below:

Shipping container fire, Wigan

At 10.20am two fire engines from Wigan station attended a fire on Miry Lane in Wigan.

It involved a metal shipping container and crews used two hoses and two sets of breathing apparatus to battle the blaze.

GMFRS were on the scene for an hour and 50 minutes.

Garden workshop fire, Whitefield

One fire engine from Whitefield and one from Broughton were called at 10.44am to reports of a fire on Spring Avenue in Whitefield.

A workshop shed had accidentally caught fire due to faulty electrics. Firefighters used a short extension ladder, breaking in gear and a hose to put out the flames, and were in attendance for an hour and a half.

  • Fires in the home can be caused by faulty electrical appliances, plugs and cables that are old or poorly wired. Just because there's no flame, doesn't mean there's no fire risk. Find out what to check for to ensure your appliances don't put you or your family or housemates at risk from fire via the GMFRS website.

Garden shed fire, Openshaw

At 3.15pm three fire engines from Manchester Central, Philips Park and Gorton were called to a fire on Cradley Avenue, Openshaw.

On arrival the blaze was located inside a garden shed and was extinguished using two hoses and a thermal imaging camera.

Crews also established the safety of neighbouring buildings and were on scene for roughly an hour.
