Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service attended 26 incidents between 8am and 5.30pm, Monday January 8. Read about a shop fire, a corridor fire and a chip pan fire below.

Shop fire, Rochdale

At 12.24pm three fire engines from Rochdale and Heywood were called to Baille Street, Rochdale to reports of a fire in the entrance of a shop.

On arrival crews isolated the flames to the electric motor powering a roller shutter door on a ground floor store in The Wheatsheaf Shopping Centre.

Firefighters used a hearth kit and a thermal imaging camera to extinguish the flames and smoke and were on scene for roughly an hour.

Corridor fire, Scholes

At 13.01pm GMFRS were called to block of flats in Wellington Street, Scholes. Three engines from Wigan and Hindley responded and discovered a fire involving piles of rubbish, paper and bagged cardboard in the ground floor corridor.

The blaze was confined to the corridor with all fire doors closed and crews used two hoses, four breathing apparatus, a ventilation fan and a gas detector on the scene.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service was detained for approximately 35 minutes.

Chip pan fire, Reddish

Two fire engines from Gorton and one from Stockport responded to a 13.06pm call to a semi-detached property on Ilkley Crescent, Reddish.

Crews combated a fire in the ground floor kitchen of the property caused by a chip pan. Two residents, a man and a woman, had both exited the building before firefighters arrived.

GMFRS used one hose, two breathing apparatus and a ventilation fan and were on the scene for an hour and 15 minutes.

Most house fires start in the kitchen, so ensure you:

  •         Remember any type of pan can catch fire - this includes a wok, a grill or a frying pan.
  •         When deep frying, always dry the food before you put it in the oil.
  •         Never fill a pan more than one-third full of oil. If the oil starts to smoke, it's too hot - turn off the heat and leave it to cool down.
  •         Swap your chip pan for an electric deep fat fryer - thermostatically controlled electrical deep fat fryers that plug into the wall are much safer to use.
