Firefighters issue electric heater warning after Denton flat fire

Borough: Tameside

Incident Date: 21 January 2015

FIREFIGHTERS are urging people to take care with electric heaters during cold weather after a flat fire in Denton last night, Tuesday January 20.

A crew from Ashton Fire Station were called to the flat on Hyde Road, Denton, at around 10pm.

Four firefighters in breathing apparatus used two hose reels to tackle the blaze in the living room of the ground floor flat.

A woman who lived in the property escaped the fire before firefighters arrived.

Watch Manager Trevor Smallwood, who was in charge of the incident, said: "We think this fire was caused by an electric heater which was left too close to a sofa.

"These heaters are very powerful and if they are left too close to furniture the radiated heat can start a fire.

"There was a smoke alarm in this property, but it wasn't working - the woman who lived in the property was very lucky to escape from this blaze unharmed.

"A faulty smoke alarm is no better than not having one at all. Make sure you have a fire alarm on every level of your home and test them once a week to make sure they're working."
