Crew called to eleven deliberate fires in just one hour in Flixton

Borough: Trafford

Incident Date: 13 February 2016

FIREFIGHTERS are urging residents in Flixton to make sure their gardens and wheelie bins are secure after a spate of arson attacks last night.

Crew from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) were called to eleven separate incidents across Flixton between 4.40am and 5.52am this morning, Saturday, February 13.

Firefighters extinguished fires involving wheelie bins, sheds and cars some of which spread to nearby properties. Every blaze is believed to have been started deliberately.

Group Manager Paul Starling, one of the officers at the scene last night, said: “All these incidents happened in a small area between Davyhulme Park Golf Course and Woodsend Park.

“If you live in this area please make sure your wheelie bins are secure and are left a safe distance from your home.

“At the peak of this spate of arson attacks we had 16 fire engines dealing with separate incidents in Flixton.

“A crew from Stretford and Sale spent over an hour putting out a wheelie bin fire on Ullswater Road, which had spread to a bungalow.

“Firefighters from Moss Side and Sale extinguished a vehicle, which was set alight while parked in a car port, and a crew from Gorton had to extinguish a wheelie bin fire which had set a garage alight.

“These are just a few of the incidents our crew had to deal with last night and we believe they are all deliberate fires.

“We are working very closely with Greater Manchester Police and our staff will be in the area today offering advice, reassurance and Safe and Well Checks to residents.”
