Two children in hospital after Swinton roof blaze

Borough: Salford

Incident Date: 10 December 2016

TWO children have been taken to hospital after a serious fire in the roof of a terraced house in Swinton this morning, Saturday December 10, 2016.

Six fire engines and a hydraulic platform vehicle were called to Kenilworth Avenue shortly after 4am after reports of a roof on fire.

Firefighters in breathing apparatus used hose reels and jets to extinguish the blaze and spent hours cutting away parts of the roof to ensure the fire was confined to one home.

Station Manager Andy Berry said: “When firefighters arrived they were faced with a large fire in the roof space of the property.

“At the height of the blaze we needed six fire engines to give us enough crew to search inside the house and tackle the fire.

“Firefighters did a fantastic job and worked really hard to stop the fire from spreading to neighbouring properties.

“A 15-year-old boy and a 5-year-old boy managed to escape the fire before we arrived, but they were treated by paramedics and taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.

“Fire investigators and officers from Greater Manchester Police are launching a joint investigation into the cause, which will this start this morning.

“A crew from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service will remain on the scene throughout today.”
