Firefighters respond to house fire in south Manchester where one man has tragically died
A man has died following a house fire in Manchester, believed to have involved an e-scooter.
At just after 3am this morning (Friday, August 2) North West Fire Control received multiple 999 calls reporting a large fire at the property in Chorlton.
Four fire engines from Moss Side, Withington, Sale and Stretford Community Fire Stations were quickly mobilised to the blaze involving a semi-detached house on Ellesmere Road South.
Firefighters were met with a significant, well-developed fire that had spread through the ground and first floors of the house, with an additional engine called to the scene to support.
One man in his 30s had self-rescued before the arrival of the fire service and was treated by GMFRS crews before being cared for by colleagues from North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) and taken to Wythenshawe Hospital.
Firefighters wore breathing apparatus and used multiple hose reels to tackle the fire while searching the property in an attempt to rescue another man.
Sadly, a man in his 70s was found and had passed away in the property.
The fire was extinguished at around 7am and a full investigation into the cause of the blaze is taking place, while ensuring the safety of the house and surrounding area.
GMFRS crews remain at the scene alongside Greater Manchester Police (GMP) who are assisting with the investigation, and to reassure the local community and all those affected.
Ben Levy, GMFRS Area Manager, said:
“First and foremost, our thoughts are with the family and friends of the man who has very sadly died during this devastating incident. Crews remain in attendance on Ellesmere Road South and are there for anyone in the community affected by the fire and to provide reassurance.
“I would like to commend the firefighters who did all they could in very difficult conditions in an attempt to save lives and stop the fire spreading further. They worked tirelessly to minimise the impact of this fire for surrounding residents.
“At this stage we cannot confirm the exact cause of the fire”
