Firefighters called to blaze at Salford leisure centre

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) crews have been tackling a fire at a leisure centre on Liverpool Road in Salford this morning (Friday 10 May).

09:15am update

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “Four fire engines remain at the scene of a fire at a leisure centre on Liverpool Street, Salford this morning.

“Crews were first called to the blaze just before 2:45am in the early hours of the morning (Friday 10 May). At the height of the incident eight fire engines from across the city-region were mobilised to the scene, together with specialist appliances, and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used hose reels and jets to bring the fire under control and prevent further spread.

“Road closures remain in place around the incident this morning while firefighters damp down any remaining hotspots and work with emergency service partners and the local authority to keep the scene safe. We expect to remain at the scene throughout the rest of the day.

“We ask that local residents and members of the public continue to avoid the area while crews carry out their work.”

06:45am update

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “At around 2.45am today (Friday May 10) eight fire engines from across Greater Manchester plus the command support unit from Hyde fire station, the prime mover from Bolton fire station, and the technical response from Leigh were called to a fire involving a leisure centre off Liverpool Street, Salford.

“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus worked quickly to get the blaze under control using hose reels and jets. Crews remain in attendance alongside partners from Greater Manchester Police and Salford City Council with road closures in place.”
