Three firefighters at the scene of a fire

Key stage 2

KS2 - New Recruits

Get your pupils learning outside the classroom, working together, investigating and exploring, in the Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service training and safety centre.

The visitor journey will take your learners through the eyes of a firefighter. Taking on the role of Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service recruits the participants will experience a 999 control centre, respond to a road traffic collision, carry out a safe and well check, learn about the recovery position for an unresponsive casualty, investigate fires and many more exciting activities!

The key stage 2 learners will feel part of the fire service and what it’s like to become a new recruit.

This educational package offers an insight into what the fire service does and also delivers key safety messages on a visit that could save your life.

The new recruits will;

Listen to an emergency call in our control room and learn about the consequences of hoax calls

Spot fire hazards and dangers in the home and learn when to test your smoke alarm

See the effects and consequences of a fire

Know what to do if your clothes catch fire

Identify and demonstrate what number to call in an emergency

Practice escape plans

Recognise if someone is unresponsive and not breathing

Information for Teachers

Schools can bring up to 40 learners at a time, these will be then split into equal 'watches' of 20

Each watch is led around by one of the Prevention Educational Instructors, supported by at least one adult from your school.

Every visit begins and ends with an interactive safety quiz followed by a film in our immersive theatre. Results of the quiz can be shared with your school.

We aim to have a 30-minute lunch around noon.

All visitors should bring their own food and drink provisions as we have no facilities on site.

Our adult to child ratio for visits is 1:10, groups are asked to make sure that there are enough accompanying adults on the day, you can bring more adults to meet your own school's requirements.

The visit and resources are designed to encourage learners’ current and future moral, cultural, mental and physical development. At GMFRS we aim to prepare all learners for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life, promoting the development of knowledge, understanding and skills they need to be educated citizens.
