27/09/2015 Wigan Wallgate fire

FIREFIGHTERS rescued three people after a fire at a disused building in Wigan Town Centre in the early hours of Sunday.

Crews were called to the site of a former solicitors on Wallgate, near Wigan Wallgate Train Station at 4.15am, after a fire had broken out on the fourth floor of the building.

Three people, believed to be homeless, were rescued and 10 fire engines from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, an air incident unit and support vehicles from Lancashire Fire Service were in attendance.

Breathing apparatus were used in extinguishing the fire and thermal imagining searches were carried out to ensure there were no further people inside the building. An investigation will now be carried out in to the cause.

Incident Commander Steve Sheridan said: “It appears the building may have been being used as a squat by rough sleepers. We were able to rescue three people from the first floor and fight the fire on the fourth. We then carried out a systemic breathing apparatus search of the rest of the building and used thermal imaging cameras.”

Road closures are currently in place around Wigan Wallgate and train services to and from Wallgate Station may be affected.
