Statement in response to sentencing of arsonist Jeremy Taylor

TODAY (August 18) Jeremy Taylor was sentenced at Manchester Crown Court to four-and-half-years after setting fire to the Wythenshawe Hall in March 2016.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS), County Fire Officer, Peter O’Reilly, said:

“More than 50 firefighters and ten fire engines were tied up at this incident, which put lives at risk and caused incredible damage to this unique, historical landmark.

“We did everything we could to save the much-loved building and while the quick actions of our crews saved the majority of the structure, a devastating amount of damage was caused. Thanks to the Friends of Wythenshawe Hall and Manchester City Council, I hope one day we will see the Hall restored to its former glory and re-opened once again to the public.

“Deliberate fires of any kind put lives at risk. As well as the potential harm caused by the fire itself, diverting resources to tackle arson attacks means our crews and engines are tied up when they may be desperately needed elsewhere.”
