Over 1000 attend Heywood Fire Station Spooktacular

THRILL-SEEKERS descended on the Spooktacular in their thousands last night as Heywood Fire Station lit up for Hallowe’en.

The event was split into two parts with a magician and storyteller for younger children and a spooky basement for older children and young adults later into the evening.

The project is organised by Firefighter Katherine Lonsdale from Red Watch, Heywood, who also co-ordinates the volunteers who dressed up in terrifying costumes and gave up their evening to scare the life out of the visitors.

Katherine, who had great fun in her pumpkin costume, said: “We’ve been doing this for five years now, it started off small but we’ve been adding to it every year.  Now it’s a huge event that takes around three week to set up and prepare for”.

Along with the hugely popular creepy dungeon, which forces the spectator to traverse several rooms of spooky surprises and special effects, there was a fun fair, rides, a giant slide, fire engines and competitions.

Crew Manager Chris Fowles, or Freddy Krueger as he was known on the night, said: “We had a fantastic night and over one thousand people turned up to join in the fun.  We were selling hot dogs and burgers that raised over £380, a raffle that raised £190 and after donations we estimate we have raised around £1330 for charity.  The money will be split between The Fire Fighters Charity and Springhill Hospice, we’re overwhelmed with the turnout and even had people asking about Spooktacular 2017”.
