NEWS RELEASE - Harpurhey cafe explosion - Saturday, January 14 - Rochdale Road, Manchester

Borough: Manchester

Incident Date: 14 January 2017

FIREFIGHTERS spent over six hours at an explosion in a mid-terrace café yesterday (Saturday, January 14) in Rochdale Road in Harpurhey, Manchester.

The fire started in the kitchen with a chip pan and quickly grew out of hand and spread through the business.  It is not known at the moment what caused the subsequent explosion which blew out the front windows and devastated the rest of the café but investigations will be carried out by Fire Investigation Officers over the coming days.

Fire engines from Blackley, Philips Park and Manchester Central along with other specialist equipment, attended the incident to help to extinguish the fire, ensuring there was no other subsequent explosions and to help to keep the local community safe.

On arrival, fire crews immediately requested the support of North West Ambulance Service for one casualty. The man suffered burns and was taken to hospital by ambulance.

Group Manager Phil Nelson who was at the incident said: “The man who we believe to be the café owner, initially tried to extinguish the chip pan fire himself using a fire blanket, but as it grew out of control he ran onto the street. The man has suffered burns but has been very very lucky.

“We always encourage people to call us at the first sign of a fire. Fires are very unpredictable and can often develop in ways that we can’t plan for.  So with this in mind, our highly trained firefighters are the very best people to come and help you.”

Rochdale Road was shut for some time between Prescott Road and Factory Lane whilst the fire was bought under control and gas and electricity supplies were isolated by National Grid.

National Grid also monitored the gas levels at the incident so that we remained aware of any new risk to the fire, community and firefighters.
