Mission Christmas appeal

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service is once again taking part in a Christmas charity drive to help children living in poverty in Manchester.

Teaming up with Key 103 radio station, all 41 of the county's fire stations will be collecting toys as part of the Mission Christmas appeal.

Last Christmas GMFRS helped Key 103 raise over £1m in toys then delivered them all over Manchester so that as many children as possible got a present.

Crew Manager Steve Evans, from Moss Side Community Fire Station, said: “One in three children in Manchester are living in poverty this winter. There are also many children in Manchester who are carers for their parents and because of that situation find themselves having to buy and wrap their own presents if they can afford to, meaning the excitement of Christmas Day is lost.

“This is why Key 103, through Cash for Kids, and ourselves are asking people to buy an extra present that we can give to a disadvantaged local child to make their Christmas morning special.

“As per previous years our fantastic team at Leigh Technical Centre are going to be collecting the presents on their weekly runs and storing them, before taking the full sacks to the delivery warehouse ready for the delivery day with Santa.

“People can drop presents at stations. They must be new and unwrapped (so that they can check what age of child it is for, and if it is suitable for a boy or girl)."
