GREATER Manchester Fire and Rescue Service is reaching out to the elderly this autumn in celebration of Older People’s Day.
A number of events have been arranged that will allow staff from across the Service to spend time with older members of the community to keep them company and make sure they are safe in their homes.
The range of activities includes a Full of Life event at Wigan Youth Zone on Tuesday, September 29, and a coffee and bingo morning at Hollins Community Fire Station on Thursday, October 1.
Councillor David Acton, Chair of Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Authority said: "People over the age of 60 have accounted for almost half of all fire fatalities in recent years and that age group accounts for less than 20 per cent of the population of Greater Manchester.
“If you're visiting your older relatives or friends or you can spare time to call in at a neighbour’s then please test their smoke alarm while you are there. Working smoke alarms offer valuable time that can help people escape for their home in the event of a fire.”
A full timetable of activity can be found below and will be updated as and when additional events are planned.
