Don't drink and drown

THIS week, the Chief Fire Officers Association (CFOA) are taking the lead on a campaign asking people to BE WATER AWARE to help reduce the numbers of accidental drownings.

Drink Drown.jpg

National Drowning Prevention and Water Safety week runs from April 25 to May 1, and in Greater Manchester we will be focusing on the risks of falling into water after consuming alcohol, as many of the incidents our firefighters attend have involved people who have been drinking

Around 44 per cent of people who drown didn’t ever intend to enter the water. They fell into the water by accident when they were walking, running or taking part in other activities by the side of rivers, canals, lakes or reservoirs. A quarter of people who drown also have alcohol in their system.

We will be using our social media channels to raise awareness, as well as having a presence in key locations such as the canals in the city centre, Debdale Park and Dovestone Reservoir. We have collaborated with the Royal Life Saving Society, using the strapline 'Don’t Drink and Drown' and have produced a leaflet and poster carrying this message, which is above.

Please support the national campaign by tweeting water safety messages using the hashtag #bewateraware
