Firefighters issue warning after powerful fireworks are found dumped in Manchester

FIREFIGHTERS have issued a half-term warning to parents after boxes of powerful fireworks were found dumped at the side of a road in Gorton.

The fireworks contained in the boxes are so powerful, people must be at least 25 metres away from them before they are lit.

They present a significant danger to any children who may have found them before they were removed.

The two boxes of fireworks were found by Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) abandoned on the pavement by Textile Street near Gorton Lane, Manchester.

Officers from Greater Manchester Police are investigating the incident and the fireworks are being stored at a secure explosives facility within GMFRS.

Assistant County Fire Officer and Director of Prevention and Protection, Geoff Harris, said: “Thanks to the vigilance of our staff these fireworks are in a safe place, but the boxes were open and we fear some of them may have been taken.

“They are very large and very powerful explosives – the consequences for any young people, who may have taken these fireworks and decide to light them, don’t bear thinking about.

“Whoever dumped these fireworks at the side of the road in a residential area is incredibly irresponsible.

“We want everyone to have a safe and fun Bonfire Night, but fireworks like this have no place in the hands of young people.

“If you want to see large fireworks explode do it safely at an organised event – you can find out where your nearest one is at
