GMFRS volunteers to offer advice and protect habitat

AFTER a blaze took hold on the moorland above Dovestone Reservoir last night volunteers from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) are returning to the area to offer advice to help protect habitat.

Five fire engines were mobilised to the fire off Bank Lane at 8.45pm on Thursday, April 21, 2016 to the blaze involving around 60 square metres (15 acres).

Three engines returned to the incident at 6am on Friday, April 22, when they damped down the fire before leaving at around 8am.

Specialist volunteers from GMFRS will work closely with members of the RSPB over the coming days to speak with people in the area about fires and how they can take hold.

GMFRS advises people to take home litter, ensure that smoking materials are extinguished and disposed of properly and not to light barbecues and campfires.

GMFRS Area Manager Tony Hunter said: “Firefighters worked really hard to tackle the fire that broke out on the moors above Oldham and we want to remind people to take extra care when they are out in the countryside as small fires can easily become out of control.  As well as taking up a lot of our time and resources wildlife in the area is often put at risk.”
