Ramadan 2015

GREATER Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) is urging local Muslim communities to take care over the next month as they begin the period of Ramadan.

Ramadan, which is one of the most important events in the Islamic calendar, started yesterday (Thursday, June 18, 2015).

During this time those who observe Ramadan will fast for 30 days and then celebrate by cooking food before sunrise (Sehri) of after sunset (Iftar).

Head of Prevention, Area Manager Wayne Shields, said: “We would like to wish our Muslim communities of Greater Manchester a very happy Ramadan.

“We would advise you to take extra care during the times of Sehri and Iftar.  As families prepare food at these times it is important to keep vigilant against fire hazards in the home.

“There are a number of steps which you can take to help prevent fires in the home which include having a working smoke alarm, switching off cookers and hobs when not in use and keeping loose clothing tied back when cooking.

“If you don’t have a working smoke alarm at home, please get in touch with our Contact Centre on 0800 555 815 to arrange a free Home Safety Check.”

Some advice for staying safe during the month of Ramadan is below:

  • Cooking - Half of all house fires start in the kitchen, so take extra care when cooking, particularly with hot oil – it sets alight easily
  • If using oil in large cooking pots make sure it is only 1/3 full
  • Never throw water on a burning pan - in the event of a fire get out, stay out and call 999
  • Take extra care with clothing - make sure hijaabs, shalwar, kameez and saris are kept well away from the hob
  • Practise escape routes - and make sure every member of your family knows it well
  • Have a working smoke alarm on every floor of your home - test them weekly to make sure they work
