Cheadle firefighter breathes life into the heart of the community

NEWLY qualified firefighter Ben Ward only joined his station in January but he’s already got his finger on the local pulse.

Ben wanted to deliver free CPR training to the local community following European Restart a Heart day on October 18, when Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) staff worked in partnership with North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) and British Heart Foundation (BHF), visited schools and colleges across the county to teach lifesaving CPR skills.

Two classes have already taken place at Cheadle Fire Station with dozens of people signing up to learn what to do if they are faced with someone experiencing a cardiac arrest, and how to use a defibrillator.

After being inundated with requests to take part Ben and his red watch colleagues are offering further free classes at the station on Friday, Nov 25 and Dec 16.

Talking about the success of the classes, Ben said: “I am really passionate about everyone learning CPR.  It’s a skill we all should have. I wanted to offer the opportunity to learn CPR to the local community and came up with the idea of my watch offering free classes at the station.

“All ages are welcome on any of the dates – please contact Cheadle Community Fire Station on 0161 609 1627 to book your place.”

CPR training is part of a longer term GMFRS Survival Academy Network initiative with the aim to help create a nation of lifesavers.
