GREATER Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) has today launched a campaign in Dukinfield following a cooking fire on the Queensway Estate.
Houses on the estate will receive a visit from firefighters who will offer fire safety advice to residents to help keep them safe at home and speak to them about GMFRS’ Safe and Well visits.
North West Fire Control received a call shortly after 6am on Thursday, March 17, to report a house fire in the area.
Crew from Stalybridge and Hyde attended the incident and found a fire involving a pan of food which was giving off a lot of smoke.
Station Manager Alan Ashworth said: “Firefighters gained entry at the back of the house and discovered a smouldering pan of food which they cooled down using a hose.
“On searching the house crew found a 31-year-old man, a 27-year-old woman, and three children – aged five, seven and 11 - sleeping in the bedrooms at the front of the house. Firefighters woke up the five people and led them outside.
“Family members were checked over by our trauma technicians and colleagues from North West Ambulance Service but no treatment was required.
“A smoke alarm went off due to the smoke and was heard by the next door neighbour who called 999.”
Councillor David Acton, Chairman of Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Authority, said: “In Greater Manchester we are committed to reducing fire deaths and injuries by ensuring that every home in the county has a working smoke alarm. To make certain this happens, we carry out free Safe and Well visits, which often include the fitting of free smoke alarms.
“Smoke alarms can give you vital time which can save your life and thanks to a smoke alarm sounding in this recent Dukinfield incident a call was made to North West Fire Control which led to our firefighters rescuing a family of five.”
