Underground car park fire – Whitworth Street – Manchester
At 4.33am on Friday (Oct 28) we were called to a fire in a car park in Whitworth Street, Manchester.
When crews arrived smoke was issuing from a basement car park and further fire engines were requested to assist.
Six fire engines along with special units and fire officers attended and extinguished the fire by about 5.30am using hose reels.
Teams of firefighters wearing breathing apparatus carried out an extensive search of the car park and all persons were accounted for, with no one involved in the fire.
Crews are using high-pressured fans to clear smoke and ventilate the building and shortly after 6am the incident was scaled down to three fire crews.
Station Manager Pat Johnson, incident commander, said: “The swift work of the first crews on scene meant the fire was contained quickly and did not affect the electrics. We remain on scene with and parts of the car park are still closed.
“Fire investigation officers and police will now work together to establish the cause of the fire.”
