Seven fire engines tackle Rochdale Shop Blaze

Borough: Rochdale

Incident Date: 15 June 2015

CREW on seven fire engines are fighting a fire at a shop in Rochdale Town Centre this morning.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service were called to Haji in Tweedale Street just after 2am when three outbuildings behind the terraced shop were on fire.

Three people sleeping in living accommodation at the store got themselves out of the property before firefighters arrived but the fire had broken out in store rooms and the building was well alight.

Group Manager Ben Levy, incident commander at the incident, explained: “We were called to this fire just after 2am and found it well alight. We immediately called for extra resources and at it’s height we had seven fire engines in attendance.

“Thankfully three people who were asleep inside got out and were unharmed. The fire is now under control and we are damping down at the scene.

“We’ve worked really hard to get the road clear and re-opened for the Monday morning traffic and people travelling to the train station.”
