BETWEEN 5.30pm on Friday, October 6, and 8.30am on Monday, October 9, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service was called to 229 incidents.

Kitchen fire – Rochdale

AT 5.49am on Monday, October 9, three crews from Rochdale and Heywood were called to a fire at a flat on Tweedale Street, Rochdale.

On arrival crews found a fire in the kitchen and used two breathing apparatus, one hose reel, a thermal imaging camera, specialist tools and a ventilation fan to extinguish it.

One casualty was rescued from the flat by firefighters before he was taken to hospital by ambulance crews.

The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental.

Crews would like to remind people to take care when cooking, never to leave cooking unattended and to not cook while drunk.

Firefighters were on the scene for an hour.

Safety advice:

  • If it's safe to do so - turn off the heat, but never lean over the pan to reach the controls
  • Leave the kitchen, close the door behind you, tell everyone else in the home to get out and don't go back inside for any reason
  • Call 999
