Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service attended 39 incidents between 8am and 5.30pm, Wednesday January 3. Read about a hotel fire and a mill fire below.
Hotel fire, Trafford Park
At 9.11am three fire engines from Streford and Eccles stations responded to reports of smoke at a hotel on Trafford Way, Manchester.
On arrival it was established that smoke had spread through the building following a fire starting from a discarded cigarette in an outside plastic water drain.
Crews used one hose and a thermal imaging camera to extinguish the blaze and check the building. Natural ventilation of the hotel took place and GMFRS were on the scene for three hours and 30 minutes.
Mill fire, Failsworth
At 10.31am three fire engines from Manchester Central and Philips Park attended a fire in a mill building on Morton Street, Failsworth.
The fire concerned a ground floor unit and timber ceiling in a the three-storey building, and firefighters used four breathing apparatus, two hoses, two ventilation fans, a short extension ladder and a thermal imaging camera to tackle the blaze.
GMFRS were at the incident for three hours.
