Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service attended 37 incidents between 5.30pm Tuesday, January 2 and 8am Wednesday, January 3. Read about three domestic fires, a shop fire and a road traffic collision below.

Kitchen fire, Urmston

At 7.36pm three engines from Stretford, Sale and Salford were called to reports of a fire in a semi-detached property on Stretford Road, Urmston.

On arrival firefighters led to safety one woman while crews used two breathing apparatus, one hose and a ventilation fan to tackle a kitchen fire involving a melted plastic container on top of an electric oven.

GMFRS also fitted two smoke alarms in the property and were on the scene for roughly an hour.

Chimney fire, Stalybridge

Fire crews from Stalybridge and Ashton-under-Lyne stations responded to an 8.08pm call to a domestic property at Brushes Cottages, Stalybridge.

Upon arrival the chimney was already well alight – firefighters used two hoses, an ultra high-pressure lance, hearth kit and savage sheets to tackle the blaze, and were on site for around and hour and 20 minutes.

Road traffic collision, Manchester

Two fire engines from Moss Side and Withington attended the scene of a road traffic collision involving two cars and a pedestrian at 8.32pm on Princess Road and Whitchurch Road in Manchester. They were joined by technical and major rescue units from Ashton-under-Lyne station.

Crews assisted the ambulance service with casualty care and making the scene safe, and were detained for 15 minutes.

Shed fire, Manchester

At 5.25am two fire engines from Sale and Wythenshawe were called to a fire at a house on Baycroft Grove, Manchester.

On arrival the blaze was located inside a shed in the property’s rear garden – firefighters used a hose to extinguish the fire and departed after 45 minutes.

Shop fire, Manchester

At 5.40am three fire engines from Gorton and Whitehill stations were called to a fire in a three-storey terraced shop on Stockport Road, Manchester.

Crews established the blaze had originated from a heated display on the counter, and used four breathing apparatus, two hoses and a ventilation fan to tackle the flames.

Firefighters were on the scene for roughly 45 minutes.
