Update at 4pm
One fire engine remains at the incident while firefighters continue to tackle the smouldering fire.
Update at 5.30am
Four fire engines remain at the scene of the former car showroom Carcraft of Rochdale in Nixon Street, Castleton, today.
The incident was scaled down at 4am, when relief crew from stations across Greater Manchester swapped with firefighters who had been at the scene since 7pm last night.
Firefighters are fighting the fire with handheld jets which are taking water from a number of local hydrants and the Rochdale Canal. An aerial platform is also delivering water to the building from above the roof.
The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.
Update at 10.45pm
Firefighting efforts have passed the 'dynamic' stage and crew are now 'on top of' the fire.
Firefighters operating an aerial appliance - which allows them to jet water into the building from above - have reported it is having a positive affect on the fire. They are pumping water from the Rochdale Canal.
Some resources are beginning to be released from the scene.
Electricity North West, the National Grid Gas, United Utilities and Rochdale Council all have staff in attendance and there have been hazard material and environmental assessments carried out. The gas supply to the property had previously been capped off.
Crew expect to be in attendance throughout the night.
Update at 10pm
SIX fire engines, two aerial platform vehicles, the technical response unit, the major rescue unit, a hose laying lorry and a number of other specialist command vehicles remain at a fire at the former Carcraft car showroom in Nixon Street, Castleton, Rochdale.
Around 40 firefighters and officers are using jets to put water onto the fire from four sectors established to tackle the blaze from outside the building. Crew are wearing dust masks and the air unit has been deployed to get an aerial view of the fire.
Update at 8pm
SIX fire engines and more than 30 firefighters are currently tackling a large fire at the former Carcraft car showroom in Nixon Street in Castleton, Rochdale.
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said it received a 999 call about the blaze just before 7pm tonight.
Three fire engines immediately raced to the scene and a fourth was mobilised when crew arrived to discover the building well alight over two floors.
A further two fire engines, an aerial platform vehicle and the specialist technical response team were also called to the incident as it escalated quickly within the first hour.
The showroom, which is about 100 metres by 150 metres in size, closed earlier this year and the building is considered to be derelict. There is no suggestion that anyone is inside.
Firefighters are currently fighting the fire from outside of the building using a number of water hoses.
