Heroic van driver helps people escape from fire

Borough: Stockport

Incident Date: 07 June 2016

A VAN driver has been hailed a hero by Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service after his actions during an early morning fire in Stockport.

At 4.45am on Tuesday, June 7, 2016 a fire started at a property on London Road in Hazel Grove, meaning that a number of people were trapped in an upstairs living room.

Three fire engines, from Whitehill, Offerton and Stockport, went to the address where they found a number of people outside.

Station Manager Nick Hince said: “We believe a heroic van driver helped to rescue two men from the property after spotting smoke when he was driving past.  He reversed his van underneath the window allowing the trapped men to jump onto the van and called 999.

“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tackled a fire involving the living room using hose reels and rescued two dogs from inside the property.

“We believe the fire may have been started deliberately, with a wheelie bin being pushed up to the property and set alight.”

Anyone with information about the incident should call Greater Manchester Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
