Firefighters rescue teen from a house fire in Leigh

Borough: Wigan

Incident Date: 31 December 2014

Crews from Leigh and Hindley responded to a 999 call at 5.52pm this evening to a fire in a terraced house in Wigan Road, Leigh.

A 17-year-old girl was trapped in the first floor rear bedroom of the three storey property.

Watch Manager Mick Callan said “The house was heavily smoke logged which prevented the girl from escaping the property.  The North West Fire Control operator, Hayley Pimblett, received the 999 call and was very professional, constantly talking to the girl to keep her calm and determine her exact location in the building, this meant that on arrival the crews in breathing apparatus could quickly locate and rescue her and then administer oxygen therapy.”

Firefighters used two hose reels and a positive pressure ventilation fan to deal with the fire, caused by a fault in the mains electrical intake.

A 15 year old girl was also in the house but was able escape through the rear of the property.

Both girls declined hospital treatment.
