DON'T cook food after drinking alcohol is the message from firefighters this morning after a man had a lucky escape from a fire.
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service was called to Dalham Avenue, Manchester, at around 3.50am (July 24) after reports of a house full of smoke.
On arrival, firefighters had to force their way into the ground floor flat because they couldn't rouse the resident, despite a smoke alarm sounding.
Watch Manager Steve Gudmunsen said: "There was a young male in the property who had fallen asleep after putting the oven on. The smoke alarm went off but he was oblivious to it.
"He was very lucky as a friend came round to the house, heard the smoke alarm and called us out. If his friend hadn't turned up it could have been a very different story.
"The flat was heavily smoke logged but fortunately the fire was contained to the grill pan so it was quickly extinguished."
The 23-year-old was checked by paramedics at the scene but didn't go to hospital.
