Teenager rescued from mud in Bury

Borough: Bury

Incident Date: 24 April 2016

A TEENAGER has been rescued after getting stuck knee-deep in mud in Bury.

Firefighters were called to Elton Sailing Club just before 2.30pm on Sunday, April 24, after a 17-year-old boy became stuck up to his knees in mud.

Crews from Bury, Whitefield and Heywood’s water rescue unit made the scene safe and put a cordon in place. The water rescue team used two inflatable rescue paths to get to the teenager and crews worked alongside the North West Ambulance Service HART (Hazardous Area Response Team) to move him.

Watch Manager Steve Wilcock, from Bury Community Fire Station, said: “The young man remained calm and with no serious injuries it meant we were able to wait for the specialist water rescue team from Heywood to assist us.

“He sustained an injury to one of his ankles which required pain relief before being placed on the stretcher and removed from the mud to the waiting ambulance.

“All services worked extremely well together and hopefully the young man will make a speedy recovery.”

Crews were on the scene for around two hours.
