FIREFIGHTERS were called out in the early hours to tackle an intense blaze in Cheadle.
Crew from Wythenshawe and Cheadle responded to reports of a fire which had broken out in the outbuilding of a detached house on Styal Road just after 2am this morning (Thursday, March 19, 2015)
The owners of the house were alerted to the blaze after hearing air hissing out of the tyres of their car.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus managed to control the flames using new larger hose reels which quickly extinguished the fire.
Watch Manager Nigel Travis said: “When we arrived we could see that this was a fast developing fire, the heat was so intense it cracked the windows upstairs on the house.
“The fire appears to have been caused by smokeless fuel briquette. Smokeless fuel takes longer to cool down so when it was poured into a bin outside the heat eventually caused the fire.
“It is an easy thing to do because people follow safety instructions, but maybe don’t realise the fuel stays hot longer.”
The family was uninjured during the fire.
