Fire breaks out at Royton waste recycling plant

Borough: Oldham

Incident Date: 18 June 2015

FIREFIGHTERS from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) have worked through the night to bring a large fire under control in Royton.

At 1.26am on Thursday, June 18, 2015, reports were made to North West Fire Control when a fire broke out at Wheeldon Brother Waste Ltd, Mossdown Road.

Around 40 firefighters and officers went to the address where there was approximately 200 tonnes of waste and a refuse building well alight.

Station Manager Mick Lawlor said: “Firefighters have worked hard through the night to bring the blaze under control using water jets.

“There is a small amount of smoke in the area where the fire is but we have managed to get rid of the plume that could be seen when the blaze first broke out.

“We have worked with partners from a number of agencies so far, including the local authority and United Utilities.”

At around 5.30am the incident was scaled down and around 15 firefighters from GMFRS remain at the scene.
