FIREFIGHTERS have issued a candle safety plea after two families have been left homeless before Christmas following a blaze which destroyed the roof of two terraced properties in Moss Side.
Four fire engines and a hydraulic platform vehicle were called to Hadyn Avenue at 2.07am this morning, Thursday December 11, 2014.
Eight firefighters in breathing apparatus used three jets and hose reels to tackle the blaze.
Station Manager Mick Rothwell, who was in charge of the incident, said: “At this stage we think the fire was caused by a candle in an upstairs bedroom. The fire has started in one property and spread through the roof void to another.
“The blaze has destroyed the roof of two homes and damaged two more properties in the terrace.
“Our firefighters did a tremendous job in punishing conditions to stop this fire from spreading to the rest of the terrace.
“Candles might look pretty, but if they’re left unattended or placed on the wrong surface they can cause a devastating fire.
“Please take care when using candles. Thankfully no one was harmed during this incident, but two households have been left without a home this Christmas.”
