A SPRINKLER helped protect a Manchester business from fire last night (September 6).
The system activated after a dishwasher set alight on the 7th floor of an office block in Hardman Street.
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service was called at around 10.10pm and found the sprinkler had extinguished the fire - and in doing so limited the fire damage.
Watch Manager Jim Smethurst, from Salford Community Fire Station, said: "We were called to a multi-occupied office with a communal kitchen. The office space was open planned, so if there wasn't a sprinkler any fire would have spread into the office area.
"As it happens the sprinkler did its job and put the fire out. It's a good example of why sprinklers are so valuable."
Fire crew spent time diverting water away to help minimise any damage and were at the scene for two hours as they ensured the scene was safe and investigated the cause.
The fire started due to an electrical fault.
Fitting sprinklers is the best way to limit the damage fire can cause in your home or business.
Their activation as fire crews are en route can save lives by preventing fire from spreading.
