FIREFIGHTERS are urging residents in East Manchester to keep their doors and windows closed while they tackle a chemical fire in an industrial unit.
A crew of fifty firefighters were called to the business on Clayton Lane at around 4pm today, Sunday, April 5, 2015.
The blaze which involves a number of pallets and chemicals is billowing smoke over East Manchester and in to parts of Tameside. No one has been injured in the fire.
Station Manager Paul Smitham, who was in charge of the incident, said: “We’re asking local resident to keep their doors and windows shut and stay inside if they can.
“We are getting on top of the fire and will be able to reduce the amount of smoke in the area shortly.
“The fire involves two different premises and one of the premises does store and use chemicals.
“The firefighters who attended initially got to work very quickly and they have certainly averted a large scale incident
“I’d also like to thank our colleagues from Greater Manchester Police and the North West Ambulance Service’s Hazardous Area Response Team, whose support has been considerable.”
