FOLLOWING a house fire in Rochdale this morning, Wednesday, October 5, 2016, people are being asked to check that their chimneys are clean before lighting a fire.
Firefighters from Rochdale and Heywood were sent to a mid-terraced house in Leamington Street at 9.04am, when they dealt with a fire involving a chimney.
Watch Manager Tom Hague, Rochdale Red Watch, said: "A neighbour called 999 on seeing smoke coming from the chimney of the house involved. The occupier of the house was inside at the time and he was unaware of what was happening as the fire burnt up the chimney.
“The fire was contained to the chimney area and firefighters tackled it using hose reels and specialist equipment designed for dealing with this kind of incident.
“Cleaning a chimney is extremely important to prevent potential house fires and to keep yourself and your family safe from fire, chimneys should be swept regularly.”
The fire is thought to have started by a build-up of soot inside the chimney.
