Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service attended 31 incidents overnight between 5.30pm on January 30 and 8.30am on January 31, 2018, including a chip pan fire in Rochdale.

JUST before 6.20pm on January 30, two fire engines from Gorton and a one from Whitehill attended a kitchen fire at Wetherall Street in Manchester. Firefighters used hoses, breathing apparatus and other specialist equipment to tackle the fire. Crews were on the scene for around 3 hours, 40 minutes.

AT 6.34pm on January 30, one fire engine from Atherton and one from Leigh, along with the major and technical response units from Leigh, attended a road-traffic collision at the junction of A579 and A580 in Leigh. Firefighters rescued one casualty from a vehicle and were on the scene for around 45 minutes.

JUST before 4am on January 31, three fire engines from Rochdale and Heywood attended a fire involving a chip pan in the kitchen of a first-floor flat on Morningside Close, Rochdale. The fire was out on arrival and firefighters provided first aid to one casualty who was suffering from slight burns to their hands. Crews were on the scene for 40 minutes.

Chip pans can be dangerous – please take care and follow this advice:

  • Remember any type of pan can catch fire - this includes a wok, a grill or a frying pan
  • Never leave your chip pans unattended
  • When deep frying, always dry the food before you put it in the oil
  • Never fill a pan more than one-third full of oil. If the oil starts to smoke, it's too hot - turn off the heat and leave it to cool down
  • Swap your chip pan for an electric deep fat fryer - thermostatically controlled electrical deep fat fryers that plug into the wall are much safer to use
