Tameside has a residential population of 213,410, with a
population density of 20.7 persons per hectare. The Borough covers
40 square miles centred on the River Tame. Combining a mix of urban
and rural landscapes, the area includes historic market towns, a
canal network and industrial heritage areas as well as direct
motorway links and a 20-minute journey to Manchester Airport.

- There are 89,981 households with residents.
- The breakdown on ethnicity in Tameside is 94.6% are White, 0.8%
are Mixed Race, 4% are Asian or Asian British, 0.3% are Black or
Black British and 0.4% belong to other multi ethnic
communities.
- Tameside was ranked 49th out of 354 in the Indices
of Deprivation.
- 132,200 people (61.9%) in Tameside are of working age. The
May 2005 estimate from the Annual Population Survey shows that
77.8% are economically active and 22.2% are economically inactive,
most likely due to ill health.
- 4.6% of the economically active population are unemployed.
