Training and on-going development


Join us at Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service and you'll become part of a professional and reputable organisation providing many benefits to all its staff and Volunteers.

The first stage in your training will be a full induction to GMFRS.

Our inductions usually take place in the evenings between 5pm and 9pm.

We'll tell you everything you need to know before you sign up to volunteering with us, from meeting our existing volunteers and listening to guest speakers to seeing first hand some of the activities we do, our inductions are designed to be interesting, fun and informative! 

Evening One

On the first evening of your induction, we'll register you and provide you with an overview of the organisation and a forum in which all the new recruits will become acquainted.

During the course of the evening we will introduce you to our key activities, such as Post Incident Team, Fire Bikes, Community Events, Caged Football and Cracker the Mascot!

We have guest speakers who will introduce you to our programmes such as youth engagement initiatives and opportunities and our highly effective Campaigns.

We will also give you an insight into our 'Duty Sheet 'programme - the system in which you book onto volunteering activities, find out what’s going on and keep in contact with us.

Evening Two

On the second evening, we'll provide you with an overview of our Health and Safety policy and the procedures we would like you to follow, after all safety is our business!

We will facilitate a workshop which will give you an overview of how to react in the case of an emergency.

We continue with your registration and work with you to go through our key policies, such as the Appearance, Expenses and Driving policy. This will help in outlining what's expected of everyone who wears the GMFRS volunteer uniform.

All in all, our induction, albeit compact and succinct, will offer you an honest and informative overview of what it's like to work for us as a GMFRS Volunteer and the things you need to consider before taking part in an activity.

What’s next?

You’ll be invited to a local induction at a Fire Station in the Borough you live.

Here you'll get to meet your Volunteer Co-ordinator again who will help you log into Dutysheet and find you some activities to get you started.

You will also be given your GMFRS uniform and ID Badge. … Exciting stuff!

The important thing to remember is that you're not on your own - you'll be starting with lots of other new volunteers so it's a great way to build relations and take a look at which activities best match your skills, attributes and aspirations.

Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS), Medicals and References

In many of our roles, prior to starting your volunteering role, we may require you to undertake clearance for the following:

DBS – Please remember, having a criminal record may not necessarily exclude you from being a volunteer

Medical – we need to ensure you are fit enough to do the activities we are asking you to on our behalf. Therefore in some instances medical questionnaires may be sent out for you to complete.

References – for all our volunteers we will require 2 references. These could be from an employer (past or present), academic representatives (school, college or university) or a character reference from someone who knows you well.

On-going development and support

Whilst you are a GMFRS volunteer you will be invited to a number of events, activities and training courses, all set up to help you develop both personally and professionally

You will meet your Volunteer Coordinator on a regular basis and have a 1-1 meeting with them every 6 months. Here you can discuss with them what you would like to do, how you would like to progress and anything else!

Depending on what type of volunteer you choose to be, the training will be in many cases mandatory. This is to ensure all our volunteers are skilled and knowledgeable in the issues that matter.
