FireSmart is a free, confidential programme offering education and advice to anyone aged 17 years and under who may be exhibiting signs of fire setting behaviour.
Our aim is to work directly with children, young people and their families to increase fire safety awareness and reduce the risk of harm through active discussion about the dangers of fire.
Children and young people may be referred onto this programme from a variety of sources including parents, teachers, Youth Offending Teams (YOT) and a range of other services. However please be aware that parental/guardian consent is always required before work with the child or young person can commence.
Once referred onto the programme, Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service (GMFRS) will arrange for a Home Safety Check to be carried out as soon as possible at the residence of the child or young person.
We will inspect the home, help the householder to spot any potential fire hazards and demonstrate how to reduce and prevent the risk of fire.
Smoke alarms will be fitted where required and we will assist with the development of an escape plan for anyone living in the property.
GMFRS staff will then visit the child or young person at their home, however subsequent visits may be held at a different agreed location if required. The total number of visits carried out will vary depending on each individual circumstance.
A variety of resources and techniques are used in each visit to encourage the child or young person to take ownership of their actions and consider the consequences of fire setting behaviour on themselves, their families and the wider community.
Although this service is confidential, please be aware that there may be times where GMFRS will be required to share information with other relevant agencies to ensure the most appropriate support is being given to the child or young person and their family.
Fire Smart works across the whole of Greater Manchester and all referrals must come through the central team.
